The Pont-Aven was revealed to the world on the evening of the 3rd February 2004. She started to leave the undercover dock at 1658, the whole process taking a painstaking 50 minutes to complete. She is now berthed outside the 'hanger' and is scheduled to sail down the River Ems at 0100GMT on 7th February. More photos available

A BFE member was there to witness the event:
"Myself & a friend drove to Papenburg on the afternoon of Tuesday 3rd February. We managed to get opposite the dock by 1645. The dock opened at 1700 and the Pont-Aven was visible to the world for the first time. Shortly after she started to move slowly out through the use of mooring winches. The whole process took just 50 minutes. It was fortunately a beautiful afternoon being not too cold. Having seen a number of new ferries I was very impressed by the bold design of the Pont-Aven. It is definitely not one of the all too often seen ships as floating boxes.
After the ship was outside the engines appeared to be tested, as well as other onboard systems before the wind increased and she was brought alongside with the assistance of tugs.
Some people say a ship is born when she takes to the water for the first time. For me, its when she leaves the yard to commence her working life. Pont-Aven has been born and long may she sail!"
