On the 13th September the Pont-Aven entered her element for the first time. Alex Gourvennec, Michel Maraval and Henri-Jean Lebeau pressed the button allowing 100 million litres of water to flood the construction dock, allowing the Pont-Aven to float for the first time. The ship was then moved to the front of the dock when construction will continue, including the final outfitting. At the time of the launch one third of the prefabricated cabins (by Messrs) have already been installed, the remaining cabins and accommodation will be fitted before her sea trials which are scheduled to take place in March 2004.

David Longden, the managing director of Brittany Ferries UK, has announced that fares for 2004 will be frozen. In an interview with Plymouths' 'Evening Herald' he said "we have to look at fuel costs and the exchange rates, but it will be more productive than any other ship. Although it costs more, it is hoped that the productivity will bring a zero increase in fares. It's our aim to keep prices the same as last year."

Construction of the vessel was also revealed to be two weeks ahead of schedule, "It's been going along hitch-free and we're really pleased with the builders in Germany. They're probably one of the more expensive shipbuilders on the planet, but they're enormously professional." (27.08.03).
